Kangas Get Bounced

Arden Street Oval, Sunday – It was the top of the table clash. It was the first of two matches that would decide the Oceania fifth division league V.155 title and it was shaping up to be a pressure cooker match. Both teams had unbeaten runs up to this match, both teams were claiming superiority, it was on a knife-edge. The result? A convincing blowout in the end.

Connors Kangas FC brought the experience and the supposed upper hand into the match, with Lysdexic Untied undoubtedly the underdog but it came out reversed with Lysdexic eventually blowing away the Kangas, 7-2. In a match that would go down as one of the most remarkable games for referees and confrontations, one that featured no less than three penalties, all to one team. But it all began with a pivotal free kick awarded to Lysdexic in the fifth minute, well within range for set piece taker Kumar Guha and he made no mistake, curving the perfectly weighted ball into the top right corner of the goal.

The rest of the first half was a very even contest with both teams evenly sharing possession, if not slightly more for the Kangas, when they equalised at the 11 minute mark. Connors then took the lead at 34 minutes through some aspiring play from Kangas midfielder Marcel Furtado. Lysdexic pulled it back again just three minutes later after a low strike from the left by Dorian Robert. With the scores tied 2-2 at the break, the second half looked like it was going to be another tough battle and it was anyones game.

However, that’s where it all went awry. A Connors defender was seen to bring down Lysdexic youngster Nat Kerr in the penalty box and the referee, Queenslander Claude Av’uon pointed to the spot, despite Connors’ entire eleven and the home crowd protesting. Replays show that they may have had a case as Kerr seemed to trip over the ball more than being actually brought down but it all fell on deaf ears at the time with Guha converting from the spot with apparent ease for 3-2.

From that point on, the Kangas players seemed to self destruct with Javier Armendariz becoming the unfortunate victim of a late slide tackle from Epifamio Fernández. In the 73rd minute, a second penalty was awarded to Lysdexic, with Guha making it 4-2. The Kangas discipline showed no signs of ceasing it’s deterioration and when Lysdexic was awarded their third penalty with seven minutes of regular time remaining, it was pretty evident that the game was pretty much over for them. Guha once again slotted the ball into the net from the spot, and the Lysdexic boys were home at 5-2.

Despite that, in possibly some revenge for only managing one goal against Lokomotiv the week before, Lysdexic didn’t stop there with both Radisavljevic (say that three times real fast!) and young gun Nat Kerr adding to the score before the final whistle, making it 7-2 at the end.

After the match, Manager Cyntech was beside himself, “Man, they gifted us that one. Kudos to the boys for staying disciplined themselves though, that match could have been a real bloodbath. We were hoping for a good result for our season plans but that’s just an absolute Godsend, to beat [Connors] away from home.”

Lysdexic now sit on top of their fifth division league, clear with four wins from Connors (three wins) and Hogans Heros (two wins). Untied now return home to host division two side Das Champions for their fifth round Oceania Cup fixture and then host the administration-controlled team Adelaide Ants on Sunday.
