Espanyol star to miss Real Sociedad clash through suspension

Espanyol will have to navigate their upcoming clash with Real Sociedad without one of their most important players.

The absence in question? Carlos Romero.

The versatile left-back found himself at the center of controversy during Espanyol’s recent La Liga showdown with Real Madrid.

Romero not only played a decisive role in his side’s 1-0 triumph, but also sparked heated debate over a contentious moment late in the match. The 23-year-old netted the only goal of the game, securing a crucial victory for his team.

However, his performance was overshadowed by a reckless challenge on Kylian Mbappé—one that many felt warranted a straight red card. Instead, the Spaniard was fortunate to escape with just a yellow, a decision that left Madrid players and fans furious.

Despite avoiding an early exit, Romero’s actions have still had consequences. The booking marked his fifth of the La Liga campaign, triggering an automatic one-match suspension. As a result, the on-loan Villarreal defender will be forced to watch from the sidelines when Espanyol take on Real Sociedad next weekend.
