Atletico Face Growing Injury Crisis Before Barca Triple

Diego Simeone’s side are heading into one of the most demanding stretches of their season carrying a battered squad. With three fixtures against FC Barcelona crammed into eleven days, Atletico Madrid’s injury room could hardly have filled up at a worse time.

Three Matches, One Opponent, No Room for Error

The scale of what lies ahead for Atletico is hard to overstate. On April 4, they host Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Matchday 30 of LaLiga. Four days later, on April 8, they travel to the Spotify Camp Nou for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. The tie then returns to Madrid for the second leg on April 14. Three matches in eleven days, all against the same opponent, with LaLiga’s top spot and a place in the Champions League semi-finals both in the balance.

Barcelona arrive in Madrid leading LaLiga with 73 points and in strong form. For Simeone, depth and availability are not luxuries in a run like this. They are necessities. And right now, he has neither in full.

The Absentees Piling Up

Four first-team players are set to miss the April 4 LaLiga clash, with some absences extending a concern into the European ties that follow.

Marc Pubill had established himself as one of Simeone’s trusted starters before picking up a muscle injury. His recovery has progressed more slowly than the club had hoped, and there is uncertainty over whether he will be available for the LaLiga match or the Champions League first leg the following week. The right-back had been a regular presence in European competition this season, and the timing of his setback puts extra pressure on the defensive options available.

Johnny Cardoso is suspended for the domestic fixture, which initially appeared to offer him time to manage a muscle strain he sustained while on duty with the United States men’s national team. However, tests following his return to Madrid indicated the injury is more serious than first thought, and he is facing approximately two weeks on the sidelines. Cardoso had played a key role under Simeone, including a starting berth in the Champions League round of sixteen tie against Tottenham, making the diagnosis a significant blow in midfield.

Alexander Sorloth suffered a head injury while on international duty with Norway and required stitches. His absence from the LaLiga clash is being treated as a precaution, and the expectation is that he will be available for the Champions League fixture later in the week.

Marcos Llorente rounds out the list of those unavailable for Saturday’s league match, sidelined by suspension. Unlike Cardoso, Llorente’s suspension does not carry over into European competition, offering Simeone at least one piece of welcome news for the later stages of the run.

Simeone’s Defensive Headache

The cumulative effect of these absences falls hardest on Atletico’s defensive structure. With Pubill’s fitness uncertain and the backline needing adaptation, Simeone will need to improvise in a match where shape and organisation tend to matter more than most. Barcelona, even without Raphinha — who suffered a hamstring injury on Brazil duty during the international break and is expected to miss several weeks — remain a side capable of punishing any defensive disorganisation.

Atletico had shown strong recent form in the lead-up to the international break, recording home wins against Real Sociedad and Getafe, and the squad retains genuine quality throughout. But navigating this stretch of the fixture list short-handed against the most in-form side in Spain will test both Simeone’s tactical adaptability and the depth of his roster.

How well the injuries are managed over the coming days could go a long way to deciding how deep into April Atletico remain in contention on both fronts.
