Chelsea successfully defended their Women’s League Cup title with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Ashton Gate in Bristol. Goals from Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones secured the trophy in front of a competition-record crowd of 21,619.
The result marked Chelsea’s fourth League Cup title and their seventh consecutive appearance in the final. Manchester United, playing in their first League Cup final, suffered their 16th loss in 20 games against the Blues.
James Opens Scoring Against Former Club
The match started with both teams creating early chances. Elisabeth Terland tested Hannah Hampton from distance in the opening minutes, while Chelsea enjoyed consistent possession without creating clear openings.

Chelsea broke through in the 19th minute after a defensive error. Dominique Janssen’s underhit back pass allowed James to intercept and finish coolly past Phallon Tullis-Joyce. The England winger celebrated against her former club with a clinical near-post finish.
Manchester United responded well and created several opportunities before halftime. Terland fired wide on multiple occasions, while Ellen Wangerheim couldn’t convert a dangerous Melvine Malard cross from close range. Captain Maya Le Tissier made a crucial goal-line challenge on Alyssa Thompson to keep United in the contest.
Second-Half Control
The second half saw United push for an equalizer, forcing Hampton into several saves. However, the match was marred by an injury to Chelsea substitute Nathalie Bjorn, who came on in the 62nd minute but had to leave just five minutes later in visible distress with what appeared to be a calf injury.
Chelsea sealed the victory in the 76th minute. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd delivered a deep cross into the box, and after an aerial challenge, the ball fell to Beever-Jones. The substitute reacted quickest and poked home from close range to make it 2-0.
Manchester United threw everything forward in the final stages, including eight minutes of stoppage time. Tullis-Joyce denied James a third goal with a strong near-post save, but Chelsea defended comfortably to see out the win.
First Silverware of the Season
The victory represents Chelsea’s first trophy of the 2025-26 season under manager Sonia Bompastor. Speaking after the match, Bompastor acknowledged the pressure of finals but emphasized the importance of competing for trophies.
Manchester United manager Marc Skinner made two changes from the team that lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup three weeks earlier. Jayde Riviere returned from injury to replace Millie Turner, while Terland came in for Hinata Miyazawa, who was away with Japan at the Asian Cup.
The attendance of 21,619 set a new record for a Women’s League Cup final, surpassing the previous mark. Chelsea have now won the competition in 2020, 2021, 2025, and 2026.
What’s Next
Chelsea return to Women’s Super League action on March 18, 2026, when they host Brighton at Kingsmeadow. The Blues currently sit third in the WSL table, 12 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
Manchester United will look to bounce back from the disappointment as they continue their push for Champions League qualification. The Red Devils remain in second place in the league standings.
