Spain Secures Five Champions League Spots Amidst Tight La Liga Race

FC Barcelona

In a significant development for Spanish football, Spain has secured an additional berth in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League. This means that the top five teams in La Liga will qualify for Europe’s premier club competition. The achievement comes as a result of strong performances by Spanish clubs in European competitions and Italy’s Lazio being eliminated from the Europa League. Currently, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Athletic Club, and Villarreal occupy these top positions. If Athletic Club wins the Europa League without finishing in the top four, Spain could have six teams in the Champions League.

Currently, the La Liga standings are as follows:

  1. FC Barcelona – 70 points (31 matches)
  2. Real Madrid – 66 points (31 matches)
  3. Atlético Madrid – 63 points (31 matches)
  4. Athletic Club – 57 points (31 matches)
  5. Villarreal – 51 points (30 matches)
  6. Real Betis – 48 points (31 matches)
  7. Celta Vigo – 43 points (31 matches)
  8. Mallorca – 43 points (31 matches)
  9. Real Sociedad – 41 points (31 matches)
  10. Rayo Vallecano – 40 points (31 matches)

The title race remains intense, with Barcelona leading by four points over Real Madrid. Barcelona, under manager Hansi Flick, is also competing in the Champions League semi-finals against Inter Milan and has reached the Copa del Rey final, where they will face Real Madrid on April 26.

Real Madrid, after a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals, is focusing on domestic success. They face a crucial match against Athletic Club and are aiming to close the gap with Barcelona in the league standings.

Atlético Madrid, currently third, is looking to capitalize on their position and secure a Champions League spot. They have a relatively favorable schedule ahead, facing teams from the lower half of the table in the remaining fixtures.

At the bottom of the table, the relegation battle is heating up. Leganés, Las Palmas, and Real Valladolid occupy the relegation spots, with Valladolid facing a challenging path to survival.

With seven matches remaining, the La Liga season promises an exciting conclusion, both at the top and bottom of the table.
